Knowledge Transfer: Triin Rolanto’s Training Cycle at the University of Helsinki

From 16th to 20th of September, 2024, Triin Rolanto participated in the Training Cycle “Clinical Research (CVM)” as part of the OH-Boost project. The three-week hybrid training, conducted by the University of Helsinki, combined theoretical seminars with hands-on veterinary practice at the University’s Equine Clinic.

Throughout the programme, Triin gained invaluable insights into clinical research, particularly in equine and small animal medicine. She attended two seminars: one focusing on the challenges of horse anesthesia and the other on minimizing errors in drug administration. These discussions led to practical solutions, including the development of a non-punitive reporting system for clinical mistakes.
Triin was also actively involved in a field castration procedure in a rural setting with fellow veterinarians and students, where she observed and assisted in clinical studies. One such study investigated changes in joint fluid in horses with arthritic changes in the fetlock joint, providing Triin with direct experience in equine clinical research.
As part of the training, Triin presented her PhD research to Finnish veterinarians, engaging in an active discussion with renowned researchers and professors, including former colleagues from Estonia.
The practical experiences and discussions during her time at the University of Helsinki have equipped Triin with useful knowledge that she looks forward to implementing in the clinics of the Estonian University of Life Sciences.
