The Institute of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Sciences of the Estonian University of Life Sciences (Eesti Maaülikool) opens the position of: 

Two Research Fellow Positions in Molecular Diagnostics,
​
Microbiology, Physiology and Medicine

​

These positions belong to the team of COMBIVET ERA Chair (Chair of Comparative Medicine in the Institute of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Sciences of the Estonian University of Life Sciences), OH BOOST and CHAIR OF VETERINARY BIOMEDICINE AND FOOD HYGIENE (VL VB).
​The European Partnership on Animal Health & Welfare (EUP AH&W) intends to be a Research and Innovation Partnership set up in the context of Horizon Europe under a co-funding agreement. Its general goals are to progress Europe towards healthy and sustainable livestock production systems (for both terrestrial and aquatic animals), including the new tools for disease diagnosis, novel vaccine platforms, reduction of anti-microbial usage, and to greatly improve production animal welfare, in line with the European Green Deal and farm-to-fork strategy. The EUP AH&W includes 56 Research Performing Organizations (RPO) and 30 Funding Organizations (FO) from 24 EU and non-EU European countries. The partners collaborated to transpose 16 actions from the EUP Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (EUP SRIA) into 17 Joint Internal Projects (JIPs). The overall coordination of the EUP AH & W is performed by the University of Ghent, Belgium.  EMU has received co-funding from the project (grant agreement No 101136346 — EUPAHW) to be engaged in three actions related to understanding of infectious disease pathophysiology, biomarkers to monitor and diagnose infection diseases and development of vaccine candidates / platforms.

The position’s commencement date: From 17.07.2024

​The positions are initially for 1 year period with potential of extension.

Responsibilities:
  • To participate in the team’s research activities by planning and conducting research and innovation;
  • To write and publish research papers and other printed and online media;
  • To deliver relevant lectures to students, academic peers and public;
  • To work with the colleagues within the COMBIVET ERA Chair and OH-BOOST teams and the other colleagues from the university.  
  • To supervise and guide different postgraduate research students (PhD, MSc)
  • To take part in outreach and public engagement activities of the research team and the university.

Required qualification:

As a key member of the team, the selected candidate should fulfil the following general criteria,

Main research qualifications:
  • A PhD degree in molecular biology/ cell biology/ microbiology/ pathology/ immunology/ infectious disease with relevance to a clinical or physiological or epidemiology related fields with strong molecular and cell biology experience.
  • She/he has to fulfil the criteria of the level R2 (Recognized Researcher) level of the European Framework for Researcher Careers profiles.

and she/he possessing following expertise are preferred:
  • has laboratory experience (wet laboratory) of research work in molecular biology, cell biology, microbiology, pathology, immunology, infectious disease, zoonotic pathogens, antimicrobial resistance which are indexed in Thomson Reuters Web of Science or Scopus;
  • has basic bioinformatics knowledge on high throughput transcriptomics and /or lipidomics and /or proteomics data analysis.
  • has worked with animal models and infected materials (farm and/or laboratory animals)- preferred but not essential
  • is qualified to perform teaching, delivers lectures in her/his discipline;
  • has promoted her/his field of research;
  • has organized public seminars, workshops and lectures;
  • has the ability to collaborate effectively as part of the team and should hold good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • has proven track records of grant writing / preparation
  • has previous track records on collaborative research work
 
Benefits:
  • Salary is based on the level of experience and depending on the EMU rules and regulations (this amount is subject to employee taxes and shall be supplemented by healthcare and social services required by law);
  • Access to research facilities located in the Estonian University of Life Sciences;
  • Support for making arrangements and settling in Estonia.

Required language skills: Superior English

Workload: 1.00 (full-time)

    • List of scientific publications, indexed in Thomson Reuters Web of Science or Scopus; 
    • Books and book chapters;
    • Awarded patents/awards
    • Candidates should provide referees name of two individuals who can be called upon to provide information regarding the candidate’s work;
    • Other relevant materials at the discretion of the applicant.
